Learn how to build self-compassion to lead a more rewarding personal and professional life. Through course readings and asynchronous online discussion forums, participants will explore and discuss being kinder to ourselves, judging ourselves less, and embracing our imperfect selves as part of an imperfect world. Participants will also explore the benefits of self-compassion in the classroom. “A thinking student is an engaged student.” Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics presents 14 optimal practices that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics thinking and learning to occur. Peter Liljedahl provides the what, why, and how of each practice. The text includes macro and micro moves to shift instructional practices. Teachers will read firsthand accounts of how these practices foster thinking through teacher and student interviews and student work samples. When these 14 practices are combined, instruction moves beyond institutional norms and habits, providing the opportunity for learner-centered, student-owned deep mathematical thinking and learning.

This course is centered around the Dave Burgess book "Teach Like a Pirate." We will focus on inspiration, practical techniques, and innovative ideas that will help increase student engagement, boost creativity, and transform your life as an educator.
You'll learn how to: • Tap into and dramatically increase your passion as a teacher • Develop outrageously engaging lessons that draw students in like a magnet • Establish rapport and a sense of camaraderie in your classroom • Transform your class into a life-changing experience for your students • Tie engagement strategies to the RCAS Instructional Framework This course has due dates every two weeks. Learners have flexibility within the timeframe for when and how they want to complete the work (Zoom meetings every two weeks OR online discussion posts). Learners must meet deadlines. Timely participation is key to making this course meaningful. Participants must be on time with discussion posts or live chat participation. If a participant misses 3 deadlines, he/she will be dropped from the course.
